The area known as the Tri-Valley comprises the City of Pleasanton, Hacienda's home, and four nearby communities that are located in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. The Tri-Valley Rising 2018 report calls the Tri-Valley "an ecosystem of innovation."
The Tri-Valley has developed an ecosystem of innovation partly as a result of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the Sandia National Laboratory. As the report points out, the two national laboratories have led the region in innovation for more than 50 years. The strong relationships between local businesses and those labs, particularly through the Livermore Valley Open Campus program, encourages the research done by the labs to flow to the marketplace in the forms of new business and products.

More recently, the creation of the i-GATE business incubator and other resources for entrepreneurs have helped lead to more than $4 billion in Tri-Valley venture capital and private equity investment over the past 10 years. Today an estimated 450 technology companies call the Tri-Valley region home.
A variety of local public-private partnerships are working to provide industry-specific training to college students to help meet the needs of employers. In 2017, for example, the Tri-Valley's Las Positas College established a Work-Based Learning Initiative. This collaboration with local business and industry is designed to develop career and work experience opportunities, internships and mentoring programs, and community work and study placements directly related to a vocational field of training.
The Tri-Valley itself is an economic powerhouse. According to Tri-Valley Rising 2018, the Tri-Valley "punches far above its weight in terms of economic power" with an annual output of $42 billion with a population of only 361,000. Tri-Valley companies are supported by a uniquely educated labor pool, easy access to the resources of two national laboratories, and close ties to some of the world's leading companies. Simply put, businesses at Hacienda have tremendous advantages as well as opportunities to grow.
