Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance Celebrates 10th Anniversary

The Tri-Valley Nonprofit Alliance (TVNPA) is a collaborative hub that supports both the professionals working for Tri-Valley nonprofits and those in the community served by those nonprofits. Since its inception in 2014, TVNPA has facilitated a dynamic network of more than 500 local nonprofits, regularly engaging them through 11 annual community programs, roundtables, workshops, and professional development opportunities. It has also hosted more than 1,000 free community programs. Officials describe TVNPA as a catalyst for collaboration and impact, an advocate for underserved populations, and a hub for resource sharing and innovation.

“Through initiatives like the Philanthropy Institute, which engages more than 1,500 registrants annually, TVNPA equips nonprofit leaders with the skills and knowledge they need to grow and sustain their organizations,” says Kathy Young, CEO and President. “Whether through executive roundtables, board development programs, or specialized training, TVNPA ensures nonprofit leaders have the tools to succeed.”

Highlights from TVNPA’s first 10 years include launching the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund, opening the CommonPoint Nonprofit Center, revitalizing the Tri-Valley Anti-Poverty Collaborative, and securing many major grants for health and resource outreach. Launched in 2020, the Tri-Valley Nonprofit Fund has awarded over $100,000 annually in grants ranging from $1,000 to $5,000, with nearly $500,000 donated to date.

“These unrestricted operating grants are a lifeline for nonprofits, allowing them to use the funds where they are needed most,” notes Young. “TVNF has distributed funds quickly, with grants awarded quarterly, ensuring nonprofits don’t face long waiting periods. Over the past four years, these funds have supported critical needs across sectors including arts, animal welfare, food insecurity, health services, and education.”

In 2022, TVNPA opened the CommonPoint Nonprofit Center. This innovative coworking facility provides affordable office space and fosters collaboration. The 24 nonprofit onsite and virtual office tenants utilize shared resources such as conference rooms and meeting spaces. This shared environment enables nonprofit leaders to exchange ideas, form partnerships, and address community needs more efficiently, according to Young.

One year later, TVNPA reinvigorated the Tri-Valley Anti-Poverty Collaborative (APC), which has become a critical forum for discussing and addressing the root causes of poverty in the Tri-Valley area. In the past year alone, TVNPA hosted two APC events with nearly 240 attendees representing more than 160 different organizations. These gatherings brought together local business leaders, government officials, and nonprofit executives and sparked meaningful dialogues around issues like affordable housing, food insecurity, and income inequality to drive real policy change, according to officials.

TVNPA also secured a $1.4 million grant from Alameda County in 2023 to lead the Livermore Connects initiative, which serves vulnerable populations through health outreach and resource navigation services. More than 45,000 services have been provided through TVNPA’s coalition of partners, which include Axis Community Health, Open Heart Kitchen, CityServe of the Tri-Valley, and Tri-Valley Haven. Additionally, TVNPA received a $200,000 grant to provide sexual health outreach to the region’s LGBTQ+ community, impacting hundreds of residents in the Tri-Valley area.

“These initiatives have led to measurable improvements in health and economic outcomes for underserved residents, demonstrating TVNPA’s capacity to secure funding and deliver high-impact programs,” says Young. “TVNPA brings together nonprofits, government agencies, businesses, and community members to address pressing social issues. Our educational programs, networking opportunities, and advocacy efforts empower nonprofits to achieve their missions more effectively.”

TVNPA’s work touches every sector of the nonprofit world, from the arts and education to health services to environmental advocacy, according to officials, who say “our impact is broad, and our focus is on creating sustainable, long-term change.” Moreover, TVNPA’s reach goes far beyond the Tri-Valley. A collaboration with Candid and the Philanthropy Institute allows TVNPA to provide education and support to over 2,000 nonprofit professionals across the country and beyond. This work helps nonprofits scale their impact and enhance their ability to serve the community.

Officials say future plans include expanding the CommonPoint Nonprofit Center model by opening one or more other offices in the Tri-Valley to provide additional nonprofits with affordable coworking spaces. The nonprofit is also spearheading discussions with local governments to implement actionable strategies from the Tri-Valley Needs Assessment, with a goal of creating systemic changes in areas like housing and mental health. In support of its work and to mark its anniversary, the organization will host its fourth annual Power of Giving Celebration on November 13 at the Bankhead Theater in Livermore.

Community and business support are key to TVNPA’s accomplishments. “By donating to TVNPA, donors indirectly support hundreds of nonprofits across various sectors—arts, health, education, human services, and more,” Young notes. “We are a trusted, fiscally sound organization, known for our strong relationships with local officials, corporate partners, and the nonprofit community. When you invest in TVNPA, you are investing in the entire community.”
